Shawna Larsen, BS

Junior Data Scientist

I am excited to join the Tsai Lab at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as a Junior Data Scientist. I grew up in Newport Beach and recently received my BS from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a double major in Statistics & Data Science and Psychological & Brain Sciences. During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to undertake several projects exploring health and behavioral data, including independently developing a supervised learning algorithm to predict sleep duration and collaboratively conducting hypothesis testing to examine the effects of induced empathy on altruistic behavior. I look forward to applying data science techniques to support impactful research in the Tsai Lab.

Research interests: Using computational techniques to explore the brain and its links to health and behavior. Specifically, utilizing bioinformatics to better understand the causes of and improve treatments for brain-related diseases, particularly cancer.

Favorite food: Sushi, ramen, and pretty much any rice dish (my favorite is Loobia Polo).

Beverage of choice and protocol for preparation: Either a vanilla latte or a matcha! (with oat milk)

Favorite lab technique: My favorite package for bioinformatics is DESeq2.

Hobbies: Pilates, hiking, going to coffee shops and restaurants, traveling, and movie nights!
